How to calculate CPC

Cost per click is spend divided by clicks. The same relationship solves for the clicks a budget will buy, or the budget a click target needs.

Cost per click

CPC = Spend ÷ Clicks

$1,000 ÷ 800 = $1.25

Use this to compare what you actually paid for traffic across campaigns, ad sets, or platforms.

Clicks from a budget

Clicks = Spend ÷ CPC

$1,000 ÷ $1.25 = 800 clicks

Use this to forecast traffic before you launch, given the CPC your platform is reporting.

Budget for a click goal

Spend = CPC × Clicks

$1.25 × 2,000 = $2,500

Use this to size a budget when you are planning against a traffic target.

Worked example

You spent $1,000 and received 800 link clicks, so your CPC is $1.25. At a 1% click-through rate those clicks came from 80,000 impressions, which is a $12.50 CPM. At a 2% conversion rate they produce 16 conversions at a $62.50 CPA.

What is CPC in advertising?

CPC, or cost per click, is the average price you pay each time someone clicks your ad. On search platforms it is the primary pricing model, with advertisers bidding per click. On social platforms you usually pay per impression, but CPC is still reported and is the cleanest way to compare how expensive traffic is across campaigns, creatives, and channels.

CPC sits between CPM and CPA in the funnel. Impressions become clicks at your click-through rate, and clicks become results at your conversion rate, so CPC = CPM ÷ (10 × CTR%) and CPA = CPC × 100 ÷ CVR%. The optional CTR and conversion rate fields in the calculator show both sides of that chain for your numbers.

Treat CPC as a cost of traffic, not a measure of success. A click is only worth what happens after it, so pair CPC with conversion rate and cost per result before deciding a campaign is working.

What moves your CPC

  • Click-through rate

    Platforms reward ads people click. A higher CTR lowers the effective price you pay per click.

  • Competition

    More advertisers bidding on the same keywords or audience raise the clearing price per click.

  • Creative fatigue

    As frequency rises, CTR falls and the same impressions produce fewer, more expensive clicks.

  • Placement and device

    Search, feed, Stories, and Reels all clear at different prices; mobile and desktop differ too.

  • Seasonality

    Q4, sale events, and elections bring more budget into the auction and raise CPCs across the board.

How to lower your CPC

On auction platforms, a cheaper click comes from a better ad, not a lower bid. These are the levers that move it most on Meta.

1

Refresh creative to lift CTR

New hooks and formats keep click-through rate high, which is what the auction rewards with cheaper clicks.
